The Bomfunk MCs
Helsinki has suddenly become big in Manchester, Berlin and Sydney. A flick through a top British or European music magazine reveals the reputedly-reserved Finns bopping to the new heartbeat of their homegrown sensations, The Bomfunk MCs. These rave-stylers of rock-beat have been storming the charts from London to Milan, from Sydney to Athens and now are starting to aim for success in the U.S of A with their smash hit single, 'Freestyler' - at 2 million + the biggest selling European single of the year. Since starting out in 1998, MC Rapper B.O.W. (Brother of the World) and vinyl spinner DJ Gismo, have trawled the cultural waters of cool minimalism, mixed with crazy dishes of scary-spiders and wide-eyed wonderwalls to produce - with Finnish dance genius JS 16 - a seemingly perfect blend of old school flava and wild pop tunes. This ain't the quaint laid-back rock guitars and stolen chemical beats you might expect but a smeltdown of showbiz emotions creating a ballistic mixture of shiny, awesome dirt tracks that bitch and scratch a wildwalk on the high-fly of mainstream hip-pop. The Bomfunk MCs debut album 'In Stereo' has sold over 600,000 units in Europe alone since the beginning of the new Millenium. It conspires to catch the frenzy of mad house beat, producing great pop with sincerity and with sufficient doses of a melancholic Nordic soul to make one's heart bleed. As ultra-casual MC B.O.W. muses "One needs to bleed emotionally to make great music. The creative process is about the urge to prove something and in doing so, it often involves suffering before you can be happy". The early years of Master of Ceremonies B.O.W. sees the combination of Finnish mamma and Jamaican pappa Ebanks. Born Raymond on the doorsteps of London, reared in the wild forests and ice-caps of Helsinki, the MC man is a disciple of international dance and underground hip-hop. He grew up under the influence of Grand Master Flash - trimmings and all. A leader of Nordic hip-hop culture from the outset, B.O.W. hosts TV shows, spins the groove and takes time out to capture what's on. The man digs Freestylers and the UK scene. With a new bald pate la Mr. Posh-Spice-Beckham, he exposes his true soul to all things mad. DJ Gismo, aka Ismo Lappalainen, originally made his groove at 15 years in techno and house. His roots vary from funky kitchen-sinks of pop to the crasslands of opera. Brought up on a dish of Italian disco and Euro pop, Gismo lays great faith in "da reggae" and is not too embarrassed to own up to grooving on 70's funk and assorted ice-cream flavours. Blonde dreadlocks match this man's Scandinavian inner folklore. Together, as The Bomfunk MCs they've been slamming their aurora-borealis beat in an adventurous and original way, with thanks also to the influence of producer JS16 (Jaako Salovaara) whose industrial metal hymns spin-cycle the songs in full machine mode. JS16 is the man behind the scenes and is content to be acknowledged there as one of Europe's foremost dance producers. The guy actually has a classical-rock background, of all things and plays a mean cello, having participated in a full orchestra before the lore of the underground and of house swept him in new directions. This has helped The Bomfunks to create cheerful, friendly rackets of pop-tinsel whilst at the same time these MC/DJ's walk on the wildside, employing influences of different tinctures of light and shade. "Bomfunk MCs are exciting and experimental. I think we've produced a new meaning to dance and given it a new leaning that's fresh" says B.O.W. man. Slickness and a penchant for the Finnish Lutheran work-ethic ensures The Bomfunks place absolute emphasis on getting the mixes right for a blend of funky beats and uptown cool, 'cause without the knowledge of what's going down, these Masters of Commotion would remain as cold as the Arctic frosts that permeate the Finnish landscape. The DJ's spin in a web of e-know-how and e-know-why, operating at a global level of assuredness of where its at. No longer content to remain on the periphery of a geographical icicle, these finn-suits are motoring west, baggaged with unconscious yet self-obsessed songs that aspire to change the chemical balance between catchy jewels and rhyming spooks. For The Bomfunks stare you in the face with their hard blend of hypnotic sounds and emotional rescues. It's about mesmerising the mind, none more so than on the video for debut international single "Freestyler", which features a mini-homeboy in dreads and with his MiniDisc player overtaking his mind and becoming a strange icon of modern-living along the way. DJ Gismo commented " We are modernists promoting a free style. Innovation is the word". The Bomfunk MCs set out to touch the nerve-centre of tingling pop. The single, 'Freestyler' has proved irresistible to kids all over the globe, slamming itself into the No.1 position around the disco-houses and charts of every country with dance in their soul - 12 of them to date from New Zealand to Norway, from Australia to Austria. The London charts bombed to the funk as the lads reached No.2 on the singles chart with one of the Top 10 best-sellers of the year and started a flood of "touching-out" as they lit the sexual touch-paper at house-parties and dancehalls across the Britrish nation. Sex symbols they may not yet be, it is the image and da-sound that are ultra-important. Attention is likely to exaggerate these fledgling stars and their vocabulary is metered in stops agin' sycophancy and the pitfalls of celebrity-by-association. The BMCs are geared instead to attract audiences enthused in pop-trash and hip-invention. It's about life, laughs and spills."Who wants to be vulnerable or unassuming" wailed B.O.W. "that's plain dull". "Disturb the mind and the body-weaves take care of themselves" appears to be The Bomfunk MCs' motto : to shaft the hi-fi and create the boom-beat. This is a gleaming, steaming mix of hip-pop to tickle the 21st Century. Killer lines and traumatic chic go hopelessly together in a magical disney-galaxy that makes The Bomfunk MC'S a post-rave generation heist guaranteed to inspire pop-eyed audiences. In doing so, 'In Stereo' pays homage to a down-at-heel industrial funk crossfired by samples and radio friendly themes that betray the DJ philisophy of political correctness. MC B.O.W. and DJ Gismo don't aim at reworking. It's more about the tease and then the punch, riding the wave to sweep a pure melody and a skank, rolled into one and obsessed with roly-poly vibes. Even nursery rhymes and sidewalk samples get the foxy treatment to add to the the groove. Says B.O.W. " We started out doing re-mixes and in doing so the songs evolved into an original Scandinavian pattern of sound - and it's wild". So how come a bunch of chums can cut the rhythm from inside a fridge such as Finland? Being blunt, New Yankers or LA-LA-teens think only of Finland as the home of Santa Claus and maybe the digital Nokia mobile. But what of dilletante, hypnotic mixes and dominating contempory beats? Come on ! But is there yet a revolution that the e-world hasn't mentioned ? B.O.W. MC, renaissance man, shoots the line - " The WORLD is an e-mode culture and we are able to reach out and be accessible to our fan-base. It's more progression than revolution. We've been updating roots from the electro raps of the eighties through techno and disco through to dance, from New Order and Depeche Mode to the great rappers from Stateside. Our songs evolve from constant working rather than jumping out at me from nowhere". Hip-hopping Human League or Manchester techno The Bomfunk MCs are not.Instead, their curious electro-noise is the national anthem for Finland's MC boys. Hardcore, softcore, chill-out twangs and futuristic waves of pop kitsch mingle electronics with an aladdin's cave of dance textures like the BMCs 2nd international single, 'B-boys and Flygirls'. It gives the right to instantly access pop nirvana and party-time. Next up for the big brothers of Europe will be 1st Finnish single, the one that started the phenomenon "Uprockin Beats" with a glittering new JS pop-mix and a pair of matching Videos to feed the visual senses. Away from home-turf The Bomfunk MC's are now their country's new ambassadors, going platinum and stealing a whole host of awards across several continents. VIVA Germany, TMF Holland, M6 France and now the ultimate accolade - on November 16th in Stockholm the Bomfunk MCs sole-represent the Nordic world at the MTV Europe Awards, performing "Freestyler" and holding nominations in two categories including "Best New Act" - ahead of many a more-hyped name. After that these new Vikings aim to flood the shores of the Americas as their ancestors did before them - but this time not with high horned-helmets and proud-prowed longships but with their freestyle beat and breakbeat grooves. Childhood fantasies and rock'n'roll dreams await at the end of the rainbow provided that the BMCs remain focussed on being tuned to the scally groove of riff-drenched manic sounds and dance. "America offers us to be able to reach out and touch our musical roots. It gives us the exciting opportunity to see what's happening. But equally it gives us the chance to see if kids like our playing-style. We want them to understand that maybe their Finnish cousins have re-invented dance." quotes DJ Gismo. So ! America, Watch out ! Bomfunk MCs can seriously damage your vibes ! Their delicious rhythms and naughty beats spread like a disease throughout your system, so be warned. Your immune properties will not stand still until you've been well and truly BOMFUNKED! |
